There is a secret bar hiding behind a bookcase at The Jam Tree in Clapham (Image: The Jam Tree)Ī secret room hidden behind a bookcase is the stuff mystery stories are made off.Īll the better then is a secret bar behind a bookcase. The stunning National Trust Sheffield Park Garden lies beyond the fields behind and so does the Bluebell Railway, where you can catch a steam train from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead. There are even rooms where you can stay the night. But when it’s cold outside it is so very cosy inside with inglenook fireplaces and wood panelling. There are stunning sunsets to be enjoyed with a glass of something while the kids have fun on the grassy banks leading to the lower level. The pub affectionately terms the view across to the South Downs and Sheffield Park Garden as the Griffin Serengetti. We are travelling quite far out into rural Sussex now and while this pub is prominant on the high street, if you aren't local to the area, you probably wouldn't think of making the detour to this beautiful little village to seek it out.īut the stunning scenery from it's two acre garden really make it worth stepping off the beaten track if you are passing through the area on a day out.

There are incredible views from the garden of The Griffin Inn (Image: The Griffin Inn) Up the road is the village of Hartfield and you won’t have to go far from here to play Pooh Sticks on Pooh Bridge. There is miles of Ashdown Forest to explore from here – the land of Winnie the Pooh. One of the pub's two gardens has beautiful views of Ashdown Forest and children are welcome too. Now we are in Sussex beer lovers will be pleased to know they can get a pint of Harveys here. The Hatch Inn was originally a row of three cottages said to date back to 1430 and was thought to be a haunt for smugglers. Over the years it has earned many accolades and listings in pub guides. You might even recognise the pub from the telly – it’s been a setting for the likes of ITV drama Rough Treatment, Channel Four’s Celebrity Wife Swap and adverts. The Hatch Inn is tucked away in a little country lane in the heart of the Ashdown Forest and is in a great spot if you want to spend the day exploring the area famed for being the setting of Winnie the Pooh stories. So if all this talk of undiscovered drinking dens is making you thirsty, here are 29 of our favourite pubs in and not far from Croydon that are somewhat off the beaten track. What's even better is that us modern day explorers won't have arrows being fired at us when a new pub comes into view. Nowadays pretty much everything has already been discovered centuries earlier - normally by someone on a big ship.īut there's still little discoveries to be made - such as a great local pub that you never knew existed. Hundreds of years ago the great explorers discovered new islands, new civilisations, new continents even.
